A friend of mine enjoys watching a gospel show called Hour of Revival (or Hour of something) ā there are gospel singers and groups and preaching. Well, the other day, as she was watching the show, she called them up and asked them to pray for her daddy. The lady who answered the phone asked her a few questions about herself, and then asked, “Are you a Christian?” Kendra, who is, but who is 14 and was only asking for prayer for her dad, felt put on the spot and said, “Yeah, kind of.” So the lady said, “Okay, Iām going to pray this prayer, and then I want you to pray after me.” So Kendra obediently did what the nice lady said. Then on the television screen she sees the words flash up: “Soul saved.”
Then a little later, someone on the show announced that a 14-year-old girl named Kendra had called in and accepted Christ.
If I had had any faith in those kinds of shows and their numbers, it would be running away from me now.
A piece of advice, Nice Lady: When someone tells you they are a Christian “kind of” ā find out what they mean by that before jumping onto saving their soul.
The story made me laugh, but it also angered me. Why are we Christians so concerned with adding to our numbers and with filling our churches? There is something so much bigger, and so many of us seem to be missing the point.
